Furnace Filters? What Are Those?

furnace filters genevaThe right furnace filter lets you safeguard your family’s health and even protects your furnace! You will be able to breathe easier along with your furnace.

What is a furnace filter?

A furnace filter is a rectangular piece of fibrous filtering material that is usually mounted in a frame. There’s usually one mounted on the side of your furnace. The most common sizes are 16x20in, 20x25in, and 16x25in. They can be purchased in most home stores or even with our technicians!

How to choose a furnace filter:

Did you know your furnace filter has an important role in your HVAC system? This is what stands between the furnace burner and the dusty surroundings. The filter also prevents you from breathing in contaminated air circulating around your furnace. Therefore, it’s important that you make the right choice when choosing the filter for your furnace. If you choose the wrong one, it can block airflow or stop your furnace from working efficiently.

However, if you get the right one, your furnace can work even more efficiently! Be sure to ask our technicians which one they recommend. They carry various types on their vans to make sure they have the right ones for your needs!

Types of furnace filters:

There are many types of furnace filters out on the market. They can be disposable or washable. Some even are electrostatically charged to better attract dust and allergens! Their efficiency has improved drastically over the years to improve indoor air quality. They are rated in MERV, or Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. This ranges from 1 to 20 and identifies a filter’s ability to remove particulate matter.

Typical MERV ratings for a furnace in a home would be between 6 and 12. If you’re concerned about the indoor air quality in your home, be sure to talk to our technicians. They will be able to walk you through the best solutions for your home’s needs.

As you can see, your furnace filter plays a huge role in your furnace’s health (and yours too).

We recommend changing your filter every 3-6 months; and more often if you have pets, during temperature extremes, or during home construction projects.  If you have any questions about your furnace filter or would like to order some on your next visit from us, be sure to give us a call!
